For the key, yeah, it is irritating to have just one key. You'll have to find the most responsible person in your group - and the most likely to be easy to find! Luckily since the convention isn't thousands and thousands of people, it's not as difficult to locate one person when you need to get back to the room.
I was very pleased with how LARGE the rooms are, we had plenty of space for our stuff AND dance practice! No complaints about the beds either, but I'm not a princess with a pea under the mattress, not too picky about where I sleep. I don't recall any problems with air conditioning, plumbing, etc but then again, not surprised that some people had them - something always goes wrong in a hotel, and some have more things going wrong than others...
We as a convention-going group just have to be the better person when encountering snobby hotel staff. Be super polite and courteous to them, showing what they should be like, and while it's subtle and they probably won't notice and change their ways, you'll have the moral victory ^_~ If you are being truly mistreated by a rude hotel staffer, though, definitely ask to see the manager and file a complaint.
It's possible they had some staff turnaround since last year and they will be nicer...the late night shift guy when we arrived last was super sweet, I wish I remembered his name to give him kudos, but later in the weekend we sometimes noticed the front desk staff pointing and it looked like sneering at congoers. Nobody on staff was ever actively rude to me, but we didn't call in to them for anything either. You should give them the benefit of the doubt and not go in with negative expectations, but don't let yourself be walked on either. While you as a customer owe the staff to be polite to them, other customers and the space you are in, they also owe their customers that same politeness. Golden rule etc etc (because "the customer is always right" is NOT a truism and I believe in being nice to service people since I am one!)
